The evening of February 26th 2012 was the yearly Oscars ceremony. This is a good thing for all us dress connoisseurs, because we get to see some of the biggest stars in the world strutting their stuff in amazing dresses!
If you're looking for a new black tie event dress, then this is actually a really great time to get some tips and get up-to-date with today's top trends, so without further ado let's take a look at some of the best dresses on show last night:
Angelina Jolie in Versace
I simply love Angelina's funky geometric Atelier Versace gown with its fabulous, trendy thigh-high slit. It's modern yet elegant which really complements Angelina's amazing looks and affirms her goddess status.
Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
Gwyneth really pulls off this simple white gown from Tom Ford. The twist is that she teams it up with a white cape which is both different and just that little bit wacky!
Michelle Williams in LV
This burnt orange LV dress worn by Michelle Williams was a very popular pick maybe thanks to the peplum (the ruffle/skirt above the main skirt). It's one for trendwatchers as it's not only in orange, the color of 2012, but also a tiered dress. Interestingly, this dress took 300 hours to hand-make from organza and silk!
Cameron Diaz in Gucci
Cameron's dress is just adorable and she's really showing off her amazing figure in this nude Gucci dress with its interesting asymmetric skirt. Once again, this is on trend for lots of reasons - its nude color, sparkly decoration on the skirt and the shape of the skirt itself.
Meryl Streep in Lanvin
Oscars heavyweight Streep seems to be really channeling the 70s in this sparkly gold Lanvin gown. Its metallic tones are very 'now,' but the most interesting thing about this gown is that it's made entirely from green, eco-certified fabric (not entirely sure what that means, but it can only be a good thing).
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
Jessica Chastain's baroque style McQueen gown wowed onlooker simply because it was so different to everything else. Where formal parties are concerned looking unique can be half the battle, and in this case she nails it.
Kristen Wiig in J Mendel
Yet another nude gown is modelled here by Kristen Wiig. I think she looks lovely in this tulle J Mendel gown and check out its feathered skirt which is a hot look now too.
Penelope Cruz in Armani
Penelope is lucky enough for Armani to have made this ravishing off-the-shoulder blue dress just for her. I love how the light blue tulle is wrapped around the bodice like whisps of smoke and also gives body to the skirt of what is essentially a very classicaly styled gown.
Stacy Kiebler in Marchesa
What is she most famous for? Being George Clooney's current partner or being a wrestler? Well, regardless of her source of fame she looks amazing in this strapless, gold Marchesa gown. It's very hot as it's a showcase for metallics and don't you just love the way the entire gown seems to twirl in on itself? Striking!
Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli
Emma is looking ravishing in one of 2012's top colors, red. This Giambattista Valli gown is a very classical shape and I love the way the wide belt defines her waist and the bow at the neck is just so adorable!
Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad
J Lo looks amazing in this light Zuhair Murad gown that clings to her killer curves and features the cutest sleeves you'll ever see along with cut outs which are very her. I also really like how the striped pattern radiates outwards from a central point, further accentuating her shape.
Milla Jovovich in Ellie Saab Couture
This is my favorite white dress of the night worn by the delicious Miss Jovovich. She has also gone for a classic Hollywood style like Penelope Cruz, shown in the pretty one-shoulder and cascading glitter.
So what can we learn from what we saw on the red carpet last night? Well, there are many trends on view that you can choose from when you're looking for your own black tie event dresses such as:
Nude, red, orange and white are really popular color picks.
One shoulder and thigh-high leg slits are hot dress features.
Metallics and sequins are great ways to sparkle.
